Some Christmas presents we don’t ask for. Some are thrust upon us. Like this one.

This Christmas, you will be visited by three — no, wrong story — you will be visited by a three-part radio play about an ex-police detective from Chicago; his bumbling, unwelcome sidekick; a Buddhist computer coder from the east; and the nasty piece of work that brought them all together on a fateful Christmas Eve. No ghosts. Unless you count the guy everyone thought was dead.

A three-part radio play.

Radio play? What is it, 1940?

Here’s the trailer.

I created my first audio play a million years ago, cutting and splicing audio tape with razor blades. Not a computer in sight. It was the Stone Age. I pilfered microphones, reel-to-reel tape recorders, and vinyl sound effects albums from the community college library.

Sequestered in my room like a mole, I hunched over that tape deck and a crummy four-channel mixing board with its unrelenting electronic buzz. I roped friends and family into acting roles. The last thing they wanted was to be involved in one of my dopey productions.

My obsession with storytelling and audio theater wouldn’t die, so I dragged it — kicking and screaming — into today. I took a story from my book, “Punk Party and Other Accounts of Mischief,” and mixed in voices, music, and sound effects — hopefully in the right order. The result was an old-school radio show called “Last Call at the Crusader Lounge.”

Last Call at the Crusader Lounge is currently locked and will make its annual appearance exclusively on this website on December 16th.

Merry Christmas
